SYNOPSIS
Our Stories, Ourselves is a Brazilian documentary, directed by Helena Solberg and David Meyer, that depicts how much art can influence and change people’s destiny. It is the story of sixty adolescents from the Maré Dance Body, a dance group from the Maré complex coordinated by the choreographer and educator Ivaldo Bertazzo.
Produced in two blocks, within ten years gap, the featured film started in 2002, when the producers filmed the day to day rehearsals at the Maré Complex, north of Rio de Janeiro.
During three years the group performed three shows: Mãe Gentil, Folias Guanabaras e Dança das Marés– and the last was closely followed by the movie directors – from the initial rehearsals, the built up of the choreography and the script, including costumes development, scripwriting, costume development up to the final.
